We are currently look for a full time (10 PA) Older Peoples Consultant Psychiatrist, based in Poole, which provides comprehensive in-patient care for men with behavioural and psychological challenging behaviours in dementia (BPSD) from across the whole of the county.
We also provide an Intermediate Care Service for Dementia, providing community based services to patients with BPSD registered with general practitioners within East Dorset.

4.1 The post holder provides senior medical leadership to a 17 bedded ward for men with behavioural and psychological difficulties in dementia and to the Intermediate Care Service for Dementia which functions as a virtual ward. Duties on the ward; Assessment of all new admissions within 24hours (Monday to Friday) Weekly review of medication, falls, incidents, weight and measurements of behaviour. Daily review (notes based) of the in-patients for rapid assessment of difficulties and response to treatment, consultation with other members of the multidisciplinary team. Weekly mental state examination and recording. The timely preparation of reports and attendance at Mental Health Review Tribunals and Managers’ Hearings. Provision of senior medical input to CPA reviews and planning meetings for the patients on the ward. Duties in ICSD. Attendance at daily review at least several times weekly. Review of patients face to face in Day Hospital or their homes, including residential homes. Provision of advice particularly regarding medication.
4.2 The post holder will be expected to work with the in-patient base (St Brelades) and a female ward (Herm), which has 19 beds and 5 male beds for men fit for discharge (separate accommodation provided) to cover emergency work.
4.3 The ward consultants provide senior medical support for one Foundation year doctor on each ward. The three seniors cover emergency work for ICSD during working hours.
4.4 This post does not have an on-call commitment.
4.5 The post holder will provide cross cover for annual, study and emergency sick leave with Dr Richard Law Min and Dr Dino Matthews. Leave is arranged so that apart from occasional days only one senior doctor will be on leave at a time.
5. CONTINUING PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT
5.1 There will be one programmed activity (SPA) per week for Revalidation activity (CPD and audit). 5.2 The post holder will participate in a Peer Review Group in line with Royal College of Psychiatrists recommendations to both review CPD development and consider clinical issues.
5.3 The post holder will be expected to contribute to and attend the Trust Journal Clubs and Multidisciplinary Audit Meetings.
5.4 The post holder will be expected to maintain Section 12 (2) and be an Approved Clinician.
5.5 The post holder will be expected to comply with continuing professional development and revalidation requirements set by the GMC and the Royal College of Psychiatrists and remain in good standing for CPD with the Royal College of Psychiatrists.
5.6 The Trust supports research and development. The post holder will be encouraged, if they wish, to develop academic links with Bournemouth and Southampton Universities.
5.7 It is desirable that the post holder will identify a mentor. The post holder will be given time for this activity.
6.1 SUPPORTING CLINICAL STAFF
6.2 Within the ward team there is one FY2 Dr (currently supervised by Dr Matthews) An ST 4-6 doctor is based for 2 -4 sessions in rotation to St Brelades and Herm wards (there are 3 ST4-6 OPMH posts in the Trust) The three seniors (two consultants, one associate specialist) work together in the ICSD, there is only occasional involvement of the FY2 Drs. There is a cross covering arrangement between the FY2 Drs on both wards for annual and study leave.
6.3 The post holder is not currently expected to provide clinical supervision to other medical staff.

1.0 WTE The post holder would also have some responsibility for working alongside members of Haymoor Day Hospital who support ICSD.
- MANAGEMENT STRUCTURES
7.1 The post holder will be a member of the Medical Advisory Committee, which is the professional group for career grade doctors within the Trust. This committee meets monthly and provides medical advice and support to management.
7.2 There is a strong medical involvement in management led by the Medical Director, Dr Steve Tomkins and supported by Clinical Leads in Community General Adult Psychiatry, Acute Mental Health care, Old Age Psychiatry, Community services and Child and Adolescent Psychiatry.
7.3 In 2015, the Trust moved from a directorate structure to locality, based management. Locality managers are responsible for all Trust services within their area and are accountable to one of 3 Locality Directors across the county. The Trust has close relationships with the CCG and the three Local Authorities to which we relate (Borough of Bournemouth, Borough of Poole and Dorset County). 7.4 The post holder will be encouraged and supported in developing the appropriate management and leadership skills to fully participate in service developments.
- CLINICAL GOVERNANCE
8.1 Strong clinical governance arrangements are in place across the organisation involving all clinical disciplines.
8.2 It is expected that the post holder will play a full part in clinical governance arrangements which will include working within his/her team to ensure high quality standards for patient care are set and monitored and the personal participation in audit.
8.3 There is a system of annual appraisal of consultants linked to the requirement for Revalidation. 5 All consultants receive an annual appraisal in line with Department of Health Guidelines from which a personal development plan will be produced.
- TEACHING AND TRAINING
9.1 It will be expected that the post holder will provide training and support to their junior doctors in line with Royal College and Deanery standards.
9.2 The Trust has long, well established links with Southampton University School of Medicine and Bournemouth University. The post holder will be expected to participate in the teaching of medical students. Medical students are regularly attached to the psychiatric teams.
- SECRETARIAL SUPPORT
10.1 The post holder shares secretarial support (four days/week, cross covered on fifth day). There is also a team assistant for both the ICSD and the in-patient base.
Adequate administrative time is available to facilitate timely written communication with clinicians, referrers and patients. The post holder will have a designated office at Alderney Hospital.

11.1 There are Post-graduate Medical Centres at Poole and Bournemouth Hospitals.
